Our
Story

Our Roots
The Kensington Market Jazz Festival (KMJF) was born from the vision of acclaimed singer-songwriter and philanthropist Molly Johnson O.O.C., who grew up in Kensington Market. Thanks to her founding team—Genevieve Marentette, Ori Dagan—community members, and dedicated volunteers, her dream became a reality on September 16th, 2016.

Celebrating Jazz Excellence
Now in its 10th year, KMJF brings Toronto’s jazz culture to life with over 200 musicians performing in 92 shows across the heart of Kensington Market. Guided by the principle "BETTER, NOT BIGGER," the festival thrives on the energy of over 100 volunteers and offers a uniquely intimate experience.

Our Initiatives
Over the years, KMJF has created:

  • Seasonal music series in Kensington Market.

  • Artist recordings, including works by Laura Hubert and Billy Newton-Davis.

  • KMJF Kids Music Series in collaboration with Yamaha Canada Music and St. Stephen's Community House.

Billy Newton-Davis is set to release a new album in 2024 through these initiatives.

Our Mission
KMJF exists to celebrate Toronto’s vibrant jazz culture, foster community connection, and champion local talent while respecting Kensington Market’s rich history. Artist-driven and volunteer-powered, the festival is a true reflection of its neighborhood's cultural legacy.

Support Us
As a registered charity since 2021, KMJF relies on community support to sustain its mission. Founder Molly Johnson reminds us:
“I started KMJF to showcase the cultural tapestry of our market. Your financial contributions and advocacy make this possible.”
